I had the pleasure of meeting Chay Taylor, a Houston Interior Designer, a few months ago when I started teaching her son. Since meeting her I've gotten to know her and seen the many hats that she wears. A Mom, more importantly, but also an extremely talented Interior Designer. She took me inside her home and was gracious enough to let me share it with you. I also sat down and chatted with Chay about how she got started and her everyday life. I hope you enjoy...
SO: How long have you been an interior designer?
CT: I have been designing for years but only professionally for the last 2 and a half years!
SO: Is there a particular designer or look that you tend to favor?
CT: Jan Showers and Barbara Barry both have impeccable taste! I love the way their work looks elegant yet livable and inviting!
SO: How would you describe the style of your home?
CT: My house is a mix of all things that I love! Modern, mid century modern, french and traditional! My inclination and what I feel most comfortable in is modern. The clean lines, simplicity and neutral tones make me feel peaceful! With 2 boys and 2 labs....I need peace!
SO: What's your first design memory?
CT: My first design memory is of my mom having our home decorated in the late 70s. Our house was very ahead of it's time! It was clean, simple and modern, which is probably why I most favor that look. I vividly remember our Milo Baughman bar stools, Mongolian lamb pillows and lots of chrome!
SO: What has been your biggest challenge when working with a client?
CT: My biggest challenge is not really a challenge but it's my desire and need for my client's to be extremely happy with the process and finished result! I put a lot of pressure on myself! I am a pleaser by nature!!!
SO: How would you describe your personal style?
CT: My personal style is easy and relaxed! I don't follow trends. I stick to what looks best on me! I keep a neutral palette too! Gray, black, navy and white are my go to colors! I also focus on quality not quantity...I'd rather have less and have the best than a bunch of so/so stuff.
SO: Day to day, what are you wearing? Do you have a work uniform of sorts?
CT: Day to day, I'm in Wilt t-shirts, a long fun necklace, skinny AGs and some sort of funky tennis shoe! I love tennis shoes! I just got an old school pair of Nike low rise sneakers with a silver swoosh!!!!
I can relate to Chay in many ways. As a mother, her love for interior design and her modern flair. It's never a silent moment when we do get a chance to chat. We usually get to talk about how her adorable son, Charlie, is doing in my class. Occasionally we are passing each other after pick-up and get to catch up on the interior design world. Also, we always have a few moments to talk about how hard Motherhood is and the ups and downs you encounter throughout the way. She is always extremely laid back and a joy to be around. I hope you will contact Chay for your next design job.
